Major Functions Of The Integumentary System:
-Main function is to serve as a barrier from the outside world and the internal body
-Retain bodily fluids.
-Protect against disease
-Eliminate waste products
-Regulation of temperature

Layers of Epidermis:
A) Stratum Basle:
Single layer of proliferating columnar keratinocytes, melanocytes (pigmented cells) and Merkel cells (mechanoreceptors) also live here
B) Stratum Spinosum:
The keratinocytes migrating up, they have nice oval nuclei
C) Stratum Grandulosum:
The keratinocytes are still on the move, by this point they have kertahyalin granules
D) Stratum Lucidum:
Also dead keratinocytes (there is no real distinction here other than that the poor keratinocytes have died but have not finished the keratinization process)
E) Stratum Corneum:
The outmost layer, made of dead keratinocytes with a layer of protein around them (they have undergone keratinization)

3 Major Layers Of Skin
How does It work in conjunction with other body systems?
A) Immune system:
The skin is one of the first defense mechanisms. Tiny glands in the skin secrete oils that enhance the barrier function of the skin. Immune cells live in the skin and provide the first line of defense against infections.
B) Circulatory system:
Because certain substances can enter the bloodstream through the capillary networks in the skin, patches can be used to deliver medications in this manner for conditions ranging from heart problems (nitroglycerin) to smoking cessation (nicotine patches).
C) Nervous system:
The nervous system depends on neurons embedded in your skin to sense the outside world. It processes input from your senses, including touch, and initiates actions based on those inputs. For example, when you stub your toe, nerve cells in the foot send signals up the leg, through the spinal cord, and up into the brain. The nerve cell connections in the brain sense these signals as pain.
Questions !!!!!!
A) How many major regions are in the skin?
B) Which cells of the epidermis produce fibrous protein keratin?
C) which layer accounts for 3/4 of the epidermal thickness?
D) Papillary layer of the dermis consists of areolar connective tissue with collagen and elastic fibers.
True or False
